Tolls, Eviction & Gates

This system puts a price on the things you normally do for free: entering a city, keeping a roof over your head, and owning a home. Together they turn movement and shelter into recurring costs that a poor character has to plan around.

City-gate tolls

Every walled city can charge a toll at the gate. Approach, and you pay to be let in — in gold, or, if you cannot, in other ways. Tolls make travel between cities a deliberate choice rather than a free stroll: hop between holds too casually and the coin drains away.

Because gold has weight in SLS and coin is hard to come by, tolls press directly on the same purse you fill through begging and the odd job. A broke character can find herself locked out of the very cities where she might earn money — which is the point.

Plan your route

Tolls make the cheapest path between two places matter. Consolidate errands into fewer city visits instead of passing gates repeatedly.

Inn eviction & room prices

Rooms are no longer a one-off cost. SLS can evict you from an inn room and enforce ongoing inn room prices, so shelter becomes a running expense. Fall behind and you are back on the street. The nightly rates are set on the dedicated Inn Room Prices MCM page.

Home options & prices

The vanilla player homes can be made available on softer terms — the "Easy" home options — each with its own configurable price:

Home City
Easy Breezehome Whiterun
Easy Proudspire Manor Solitude
Easy Vlindrel Hall Markarth
Easy Hjerim Windhelm
Easy Honeyside Riften

These let you acquire a home under SLS's rules and pricing rather than the vanilla quests, giving you a fixed base to escape gate tolls and inn rent — once you can afford the buy-in.

It all draws on one purse

Gate tolls, inn rent and home prices compete for the same limited, weighty gold as licences and needs. Budget across all of them — clearing one cost by emptying your purse can leave you stranded at the next gate.

Configuring

Tolls, eviction and the home options live on the Tolls, Eviction & Gates MCM page, with nightly rates on the separate Inn Room Prices page. Toll amounts, whether eviction is enabled, and each home's price are all adjustable there. Turn any part down or off on those pages if you want a gentler economy without disabling the rest of the mod.
